Post by RukSeveral years back, I, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, transferred to
AOL after Verizon stopped hosting email. However, the last couple of
days, email seems to have stopped working on AOL. Not all my accounts,
but only the main one seems to be working. Any idea what's going on?
Same problem. No idea what happened, but I deleted my verizon.net
address and created a new one for AOL. That works okay and it was
fairly easy to set up on my Mac, iPhone and iPad.
This is actually not my prime address. If it were I would have to
notify everybody I could think of that my address had changed. I have
no idea what would happen if somebody used my verizon.net address, but I
don't really care that much.
Reached somebody at AOL.com. They couldn't explain why the pop3/smtp
mail server wouldn't stopped accepting the e-mail password that worked
for mail.aol.com.
However, they had me log into myaccount.aol.com, click on My Profile
then Change Password. Click Manage app passwords and either create one
for your mail client or update your password for mail client and then
set the app password in your mail client.
The mail.aol.com site still accepted my normal password but my e-mail
client had to be switched over to an app password.
Me too. I called them and was on the phone for like 90 min. First I
called Verizon and they said they couldn't help because they had turned
their email over to AOL in 2017. I knew this of course, but since I pay
Verizon monthly and still have Verizon email addresses, that they might
know how to proceed.
The AOL tech seemed to immediately know what was going on. I'm still
not 100% sure what some of the emails stopped functioning, but in two
cases I switched pop and smtp configs from verizon to aol. And also
started using a "generated" password they recommended. Not too thrilled
about this method as it is less secure than if I use my own, but
appeared to be the only way to get everything working again.
They also mentioned several times that this was a "one time" charge free
courtesy call. I take it from that they probably wouldn't talk to me
again if I had to call them in the future without an AOL subscription.
Not happy about that either but at least, for now, all email is working
again.
