Looking for technical suggestions for a problem with a
Verizon-branded ONT setup installed around 2007. Outbound calls
don't go through. Observed symptoms, most frequent first:
- After dialing, complete silence on the line--no ring-back
and the called party never answers;
- After dialing, an odd tone similar to a busy signal but
constant rather than pulsed.
Inbound calls and internet work fine.
Our area was "sold" by Verizon to Frontier and then to Ziply
Fiber. When I called tech support, the agent (accent consistent
with India) scheduled a service call to replace the "fiber box".
The technician said that's what the phone agents _ALWAYS_ say.
The new ONT would have to be indoors (old is outdoors) with a
Ziply-provided router for landline phone. That would be
inconvenient, so I'm exploring other possible solutions:
- Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and found solutions
other than replacing the ONT?
- One hypothesis is the Panasonic cordless phone package is
sending tone bursts too short in duration. Does anyone know
what duration the 2007-era Verizon-branded ONTs require? I
could experiment by dialing manually with a different phone.
- Another hypothesis is noise on the analog line. Is there a
spec on what noise level an old ONT can tolerate?
Thanks.
